Sculpting Sunday: My Cable Pulldown Trick for a Better Triceps Teardrop

Triceps

If you want that sharp “teardrop” look on the triceps — the clean detail you see from the side and the back — cable pulldowns are one of the best tools.

But only if you do them with the right intention. Most people just push the rope down, but that’s not quite enough.

To sculpt the teardrop, you need to control how you finish the movement. Here’s how.

Keep Your Elbows Fixed — Don’t Let Them Drift Forward

The long head of the triceps gives your arm that teardrop shape.
If your elbows slide forward, the tension shifts off the long head immediately.

Lock them slightly behind your body and keep them there.
Even a few centimeters makes a difference.

Finish With a Hard, Clean Squeeze

The teardrop shows up when the triceps is fully shortened.
So don’t rush the bottom half.

At the end of each rep, pause, rotate your palms out slightly, and squeeze as if you’re trying to “break” the rope apart.

This contracts the long head directly and creates the round, dense shape.

Control the Negative Like a Sculptor

Most people lose all tension on the way up. Don’t let the weight pull you.

A slow negative increases time under tension, forces constant activation, and sharpens the lines and the separation. I talked about the importance of slow negatives in a recent blog post, How I Train Arms: My Go-To Techniques For Maximum Pump, Control, And Growth.

This is how you sculpt, not just push weight.

Use Moderate Weight, Maximum Intent

Heavy weight usually turns into swinging, elbow drift, and partial reps that skip the bottom squeeze. And sometimes grunting, which can annoy fellow gym goers. 👍

For shaping the triceps, technique beats load every time.
Pick a weight that lets you feel the muscle, not fight the machine. As I frequently stress, ego lifting offers little value. It’s not about how heavy you can lift, but how precisely you lift.

Try This on Your Next Arm Day

On your next Arm Day, try putting all of these techniques together:

  • Lock the elbows.
  • Drive the rope apart at the bottom.
  • Slow the negative.
  • Repeat until the muscle burns.

This is the fastest way to carve details into the triceps — and bring out that clean teardrop shape everyone notices on stage.
